Game Drives

Game drives offer guided morning and afternoon safaris through the surrounding wilderness, providing the opportunity to experience the region’s rich wildlife and landscapes. During each drive, your guide will share insights into the local flora and fauna, bringing the African bush to life. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times for wildlife viewing, when animals are most active and the light is at its most beautiful.

Sundowners & Coffee Stops

Your morning game drive includes a coffee stop in the heart of the bush, giving you time to pause and take in the wilderness around you. In the afternoon and evening, you’ll enjoy a scenic sundowner stop with drinks and light snacks. It’s a highlight of every safari, a chance to relax, share your day’s sightings, and toast to an unforgettable experience in the wild.

Boma Evenings

Gather around a crackling fire under a star-filled sky as you reflect on the day’s sightings or simply enjoy the peaceful sounds of the bush at night. On select evenings, weather permitting, dinner is prepared over an open fire in the boma. These shared meals are a highlight of the camp, perfect for families, couples, and fellow travellers brought together by a love of the wild.

Wildlife You Can Expect To See

Embrace the wild.

Predators

The diverse habitats of the Selati set the stage for exceptional predator sightings, where each season offers a different perspective on life in the wild. During the dry months, thinning vegetation and dwindling water sources draw prey species into the open, creating prime hunting opportunities for predators and making sightings more frequent and dramatic. In the green season, the dense bush provides cover for stealth and strategy, offering a more intimate glimpse into the behaviour of elusive hunters. Over a 2–3 night stay at Nkuwa Wilderness Camp, guests have a strong chance of encountering the Big Five, with predators such as lion and leopard often seen on the move or resting in the shade. Cheetah and African wild dog are also known to traverse the area, while hyena are frequently heard and seen, especially after dark. With the Selati’s rich biodiversity and varied terrain, every game drive holds the thrilling potential of a rare and unforgettable predator encounter.

Mammals

Nkuwa Wilderness Camp lies within the diverse landscapes of the Selati, where a rich variety of habitats supports an impressive array of mammal species. This untamed wilderness offers guests the chance to encounter the Big Five, along with a wide range of plains game that thrive across the reserve. During the dry season, animals gather around waterholes, creating excellent opportunities to observe herds of giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest, as well as warthog, impala, kudu, waterbuck, bushbuck and baboon. In the greener months, the bush comes alive as wildlife disperses through the thickened vegetation, offering a more immersive and exploratory safari experience. With such a diversity of mammals moving freely through the Selati, each game drive from Nkuwa Wilderness Camp reveals something new, showcasing the richness and rhythm of this remarkable ecosystem.

Birdlife

The birdlife of the Selati is rich and rewarding, offering a vibrant soundtrack and colourful display throughout the wilderness. With a variety of habitats ranging from open savannah to denser bushveld, the area attracts an impressive diversity of species year-round. Guests at Nkuwa Wilderness Camp can expect to encounter everything from striking hornbills and vivid rollers to powerful eagles soaring overhead. Kingfishers bring flashes of colour near water sources, while starlings add movement and chatter to the surrounding trees. During different seasons, the birding experience shifts, with the dry months concentrating activity around water and the green season welcoming migratory species into the area. Whether out on a game drive or relaxing back at camp, birdwatching in the Selati is a constant delight, with each sighting adding to the rich tapestry of this untamed landscape.
